We stopped by Ina's brothers bike shop la Bici. And stopped by an old castle that was originally built in the 700's. It was cool to see something that old. makes the 150 year old stuff we have in Utah seem downright new. It was located in southern Holland. The start was in the plaza in Maastricht, then did three big loops in the area and finished just down the road in Valkenburg. We got there pretty early and since we had a T-Mobile car we were able to park on the square. We watched the start then went out to the course where we eventually ended up on the Gulperberg, a hill where they would pass three times. Once down it and twice up it. We hung out in that area and watched the race there the rest of the day. For real race coverage see cyclingnews.com. It was an afternoon start so we drove up that morning and got there in plenty of time for the team lunch and meeting. The course was one big loop that had all the typical spring features. narrow roads, tight corners and short, hard climbs. I got to ride shotgun in the team car with Anna Wilson, the Director Sportif, and Wolle, the team mechanic. It was a good time. We drew 8th position so were were a bit back but we did get to up to feed and up to a break in the middle of the race. There is some pretty crazy driving back in that bunch, but all the drivers seem to work well together and what to do when something crazy happens, plus there is a official kind of directing traffic in the back. Wind tunnel time is pretty dang expensive and not everyone makes Lance money to afford such things. I showed up just in time to catch the second day of testing for The T-Mobile Women's Team. I showed up to watch, and was immediately put to work as a photographer. My job was to take profile shots of the riders as they rolled by at 44 K per hour. Petra Rossner, the teams teams technical director and former world champion and olympic gold medalist, would then review my pictures with the rider while Lars Teutenburg, would review the SRM data and propose position changes along with Petra to the rider.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="IMG_1119" src="http://racerjared.com/files//page0_blog_entry107_1.jpg"width="320" height="214"/>
Track World Champ Kate Bates cranks out the laps

Due to the lack of velodromes in Utah, I have not seen a track this cool before. Capital F.

A few observations:
The bus terminal transfer.
In San Francisco we got off the plane and were directed to the Star Alliance International Terminal Shuttle. The entrance was tucked away between the restrooms and the news stand, and lead down some stairs to the tarmac and a small waiting room. we sat there for about 10 minutes, then a shuttle came. We loaded up and waited for another ten minutes. The shuttle finally left, and drove about 100 yards, 3 minutes, or .025 movies. As we unloaded I thought what a waste of 23 minutes, or .191 movies. Up some more stairs, and boom, we are in the international terminal, right behind the security checkpoint. Saved from the strip search. I could be wrong, but these are pretty sure signs to me that fall is over.

1. Last Friday's Sales Figures. $7.50

2. Saturdays Cross Race. Two cold right feet. There are two stories here. It was cold. I had two right feet. the cold part is self explanatory, so I will elaborate on the second part. I own two pairs of orange Nike mountain shoes. I got them on sale and thought it would be good to have two pair of shoes for those double cross weekends. While I was getting ready for saturdays cross race, I opened my bag and found two right shoes. I had a my left custom insole, so I put it in the wrong shoe and put it on my foot. It only hurt my foot a little bit. so I repositioned the cleat and went to warm up. after about three race laps my big toe really hurt, and my foot started to cramp. Why does this make me think winter is here? Cause by lap 5 both feet were numb.

3. My hair froze. Yesterday Maren and I went hiking up Rock Canyon. We took our new dog Sabaka, and the other four dogs. We went up the south fork to the saddle where it connect with the top of Slide Canyon. In the last 1.7 miles the trail climbs 2000 feet. 22% average grade. The last half mile the dogs made me break the trail. When we got to the top my hair was frozen to my sunglasses. 22 degrees and I was wet with sweat. Wicking base layers rule. I want to try that trail on my bike. I have friends who have done it but as overgrown as it is now, it would definitely be a workout.

4. It is snowing right now. And I have shoveled my driveway 3 times.

Pictures from the hike here

Dog alert, dog alert!!!!

<dc:subject>Racerjared.com</dc:subject>

My wife found a dog on our front porch this morning. I watched a ball sport. I scored a free 16th row ticket to the Jazz vs. Knicks game. I used to play a lot of basketball but for the last 10 years bikes have been my outlet. I would go to the gym and play 4-5 times a week, played in a competition mens league, intramural leagues, but the way you know I was serious was that I could dunk over someone. Last night brought back tons of memories, even going way back to making paper airplanes and trying to hit the court in the old Salt Palace. So in the spirit of Bob and his top 5 lists I give you...

Racer's Top 5 Observations at the Basketball Game.

1. Different People

Every cycling event I go to I see the same people, sure there are variations, but there are always people you know there. Last night I was alone. Just one of 16,000 people. I knew no one.

2. Zone Defense Now Legal

What happened to Coach Sloan yelling at the refs that the defense was illegal. Golly this game has changed. It seems a lot more like college ball. Speaking of that, those guys are young now. I think one player was in high school last year.

3.Ostertag Still Sucks

I thought Utah got rid of him years ago, what was he doing back. I was waiting for Mark Eaton to show up for the 4th quarter.

4. Fans? Whatever

I think the Jazz scored 8 points in the 3rd quarter. After one long series of missed shots, and poor execution, they finally scored. The crowd went crazy. I couldn't help but notice the sarcastic tone.

5 I like the Knicks

Towards the end of halftime as the Knicks were warming up for the 3rd quarter, I realized that their team colors were blue and orange. "Um yeah, I'm, gonna have to ask you to be a Knicks fan, they have the right color, and I think that that is important, so can you do that for me?" the little voice in my head said.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="2-1" src="http://racerjared.com/files//page0_blog_entry48_1.jpg"width="286" height="379"/>

Fall Moab 2006

<dc:subject>Racerjared.com</dc:subject>

Every year Fall Moab get planned.
